This document is intended to provide a step-by-step installation procedure for Windows 95 users who have never edited HTML using an ASCII text editor. The screens shown below will not match yours exactly, but you'll get the idea. You may wish to print this document for easy reference. After completing the registration form at http://www.ultimatecounter.com, you will receive an email similar to the one shown below. This screen shot shows the Netscape Communicator mail program. Your mail program might be different, but the steps are the same.
- First, hilight (select) the block of HTML code using your mouse, as shown below.
- Next, go under the Edit menu and choose Copy.
Windows 95 has now stored the HTML in memory. At this point, you can exit your mail program. Now, we're going to paste the HTML code into your web page document using an ASCII text editor.
- Under the start menu, choose Programs, then Accessories, and then Word Pad
- Once WordPad has started, go under the File menu and choose Open. Locate your web page document on the hard disk.
- Your web page document will appear in HTML format. Although the HTML format may be unfamiliar to you, you should be able to see roughly how the formatting works, and locate a place in your document where you would like your counter to appear. Place your cursor in this location as shown below.
- Go under the Edit menu and choose Paste. The Counter HTML will be inserted at the cursor location.
- Under the File menu, choose save.
- This step is VERY important. WordPad may ask you what format you want to save your document in. You MUST choose Text Document, not Word or RTF.
- After saving your document, you may exit WordPad.
Now all that's left is to upload the new HTML document from your hard disk to the server where your web site is hosted. You already know how to do this - just use the same procedure you normally would use to update your page.
